Programmes
Co-ordinate rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration, resocialization, and prevention activities for Street Families in Kenya
Target Group: Interventions target street-connected persons that comprise children, youth, men, women, and older persons, including persons with disabilities.
Prevention
Prevention is the use of effective interventions to inhibit persons from disengaging or being separated from their families or communities and ending up on the streets.
Prevention approach: Involves early warning preparedness for natural disasters, community-led mapping of vulnerable persons, awareness creation, utilization of local resources, responsive interventions, strengthened safety nets, multi-sectoral services, and family and community-based interventions.
Rescue
Rescue is the process of identifying, assessing, and helping persons out of street situations for eventual rehabilitation, reintegration, and resocialization for a better living.
Rescue process: Involves outreach, assessment, voluntary departure, and referral to support services.
Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation is the restoration of human dignity, privileges, and reputation to regain maximum self-sufficiency, to help street families fit back and live a normal life in society.
Rehabilitation process: Involves assessing individual needs, developing personalized plans, providing essential support such as psychosocial support services, education, and vocational skills training, and identifying and nurturing street families’ talents.
Reintegration
Reintegration is the process by which a person is reunited with his/her biological parents, guardians, or extended family.
Reintegration process: Involves initial home tracing and assessment. Issues identified in the Child Status Index (CSI)/Household Wellbeing Tool (HWT) are addressed, and family preparation for reintegration is provided. Target group and family reconciliation are considered, and short-term visits are conducted to assess readiness for reintegration. If goals are met, reintegration is conducted and follow-up visits are provided.
Re-socialization
Resocialization is a process in which a person is taught norms, values, and practices that foster their transition from one social role to another while ensuring that the environment is receptive to their adjustment.
Re-socialization process:
After reintegration, follow-up visits are conducted. Appropriate learning, training, or empowerment programs are determined based on the individual's age and education level. Continued schooling, informal apprenticeship, leveraging existing services, or engaging in constructive activities are options. Follow-up visits continue, and community and church leaders are sensitized to provide informal follow-up. A mentor is assigned, and family empowerment is evaluated. Follow-up visits continue until the criteria for release are met.
